Europe’s food and drink industry calls on the Polish Presidency to create a more ‘business friendly’ environment, supporting innovation to generate growth
(Brussels, 1 June 2011) Poland will preside over the Council of the European Union from 1 July until 31 December 2011. Today, the CIAA published a short brochure setting out Europe’s food and drink industry priorities for the coming six months during the Polish Presidency.
Europe’s food and drink industry represents the largest manufacturing sector in the EU both in terms of turnover (€954 billion) and employment (4.2 million jobs). In the months ahead, the CIAA – Confederation of the food and drink industries of Europe – looks to the Presidency to deliver a more ‘business friendly’ framework throughout the Union, enabling food manufacturers to become more competitive to meet the challenges ahead.
Given the current economic climate, Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his government face a difficult task to strengthen the internal market and promote economic growth. Central to realising this vision is the need to bolster food manufacturers’ capacity to innovate. Innovation encompasses many different aspects in the food industry, from an operators’ ability to bring a new product to market, to unlocking new opportunities for more environmentally sustainable products and processes, engendering sustainable growth.
Speaking on behalf of the CIAA, President Jesús Serafín Pérez commented: “The CIAA looks forward to working with the Polish Presidency and contributing to its success while making progress on food industry priorities. The CIAA calls on the Presidency to boost manufacturers’ capacity to innovate and become more competitive by creating a more ‘business friendly’ Europe. By achieving this, Europe’s food and drink industry will be better placed to play an important role in delivering on the objectives of the EU 2020 Strategy, namely smart, sustainable and inclusive growth(1).”
