In July 2000, CIAA was awarded by the European Commission
a contract to implement two projects submitted within
the framework of the EU Phare Business Support Programme
(BSP). The CIAA initially worked with Federations in the
following 7 countries: Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary,
Slovenia, Bulgaria, Estonia and Latvia.
The two projects aimed at both strengthening the role
and activities of the CEECs food industry federations
(through various actions, such as twinning operations,
'on the job training', communication-lobbying seminars,…)
on one hand and at facilitating the transfer of the
acquis on the other hand.
Two new national federations were established in Bulgaria
and Slovenia as independent, operating and sustainable
organisations. National federations in the countries
concerned have efficient communication and networking
equipment and strategies. The personnel has been trained
and is now operating effectively, channelling relevant
information to and from their specific audiences.
Many short and long terms missions of EU and local
experts and representatives of the CEECs federations
took place. Representatives from CEECs federations participated
in training sessions on lobbying as well as in internships
within CIAA National Federations.
EU Food Law Application Seminars with large and qualified
attendance were held in Poland, Estonia, and Czech Republic.
This project has also contributed to raise awareness
of EU food regulatory framework and interest for the
introduction of Good Manufactuing Practices (GMP) and
Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) codes.
Over 12 Good Manufacturing Practices/Good Hygiene Practices
codes have been translated and diffused in the CEECs.
GHP seminars on the relevance and for the diffusion
and implementation of GHP/GMP codes took place. Training
seminars and relevant documentation for the implementation
of GHP codes were developed.
In each country the national federation has become
the focal point for the local industrial sector to obtain
information and support on EU Food Law issues.
