Highlighting the continuing evolvement of the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, at a Plenary session of the Platform held in Brussels on 19 September, members adopted the so-called Commission Monitoring Framework.

The Monitoring Framework is a document providing guidance to Platform Members on how best to take forward the monitoring of their commitments in the overall context of implementation.

Platform members agreed to monitor their own performance in a transparent, participative and accountable way, so that there would be a degree of multi-stakeholder involvement in reviewing progress and outcomes and in such a way that created trust in the data.

Speaking afterwards on behalf of the food and drink industry, CIAA President Jean Martin stated "...the Platform has gone a long way in reaching its first objective which was to provide a common forum for all interested actors at European level where they could explain their plans to contribute concretely to the pursuit of healthy nutrition, physical activity and in fighting the multi-factorial issue of obesity.  Monitoring now ensures that Platform actions are done and seen to be done!"

The EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health was originally launched by the European Commission in March 2005.  The aim of the Platform is to improve public health, promote healthy lifestyles, help fight against the increasing public threat of obesity, and provide a forum for all interested European level actors for concrete discussion.
